THE ELDRED FAMILY - New Lisbon files
Children of Charles & Polly (Low) Eldred:
3. DeWitt Clinton, b. ?????, 1857. Died when 9 months old.
[NI0005]
By 1937 (age 28) when he applied for Social Security, Ken was already employed at the feed mill, Charles H. Eldred & Co, Inc, and was living on Main Street in Bainbridge, New York. You could see right up the street that the mill was on from the vantage point of the house, as it was only about a block away.
Active member of the Rotary Club in Bainbridge, New York; served as master of ceremonies for Minstrel presentations in the 1950s. Worked in his father's business, Charles H. Eldred & Co., a feed mill. Member of the Eastern Federation of Feed Merchants, Inc. Ordained as a layreader in 1954 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, New York. Was confirmed the same day as his daughter Claudine, June 4, 1944, by Bishop Edward Huntington Coley.
According to son-in-law Fred Breidster, Ken was quite a womanizer and gambler. He certainly made a lot of money in commodities futures during WWII, and also had government contracts that made him relatively wealthy for Bainbridge. Member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He was an alcoholic and was known for overtipping and overspending when inebriated, but he was also a kindly, jovial man who was fun to be around. Fred held a grudge because as a brand-new son-in-law he worked for Ken at Eldred's Feed in Bainbridge. He said that Ken was very demanding and made it clear that he would never advance in the company. I remember Ken much more kindly. He was a fun grampy when his health was good, and Blanche stood by him totally. They moved to Pompano Beach in the mid-1960s and had a condominium on the 14th floor of the Ocean Monach, right near the main pier. We frequently went down to visit and loved every minute of it.

Charles Eugene(9) Eldred - (Charles(8), Daniel(7), Charles(6), Nathan(5), John(4), Capt. John(3), Lt. Thomas(2), Sge. Samuel(1))
As soon as Charles Eugene Eldred was big enough to do so, he was put to work helping in the general store his father conducted at Pleasant Brook. After finishing the local school he attended the Cooperstown Academy where he secured the basis of the accounting ability he used as an occupation in later life. When his father sold the store in Pleasant Brook and re-established himself in business in Oneida, N.Y., he took Charles Eugene into active partnership with him. It was here that he met his future wife, whose father was a prominent farmer, specializing in the breeding of fine horses. The Hitchcocks were descended from an old Massachusetts family and were well-to-do both financially and socially. His wife was well educated at the Canandsigua (N.Y.) Seminary for Young Ladies, an excellent private school in the lower Mohawk Valley.
In 1876 the partnership with his father was dissolved and Charles secured employment in a grocery store in Allegan, Mich., to which place he moved with his family. A couple of years later he moved again, to Muskegon, Mich., to be employed at the Powell Hardware Company. His younger brother, Burdette, had also moved, with his widowed mother, to Muskegon, where he was employed by a local Bank. The entire family now lived in the same city.
His residence in Muskegon covered several years. During this time his wife's grandmother, and an adopted son, named George, also came to live at Muskegon. His brother, Burdette, having removed to Beloit some time before, Charles, in 1894, also followed to Beloit, where he was employed as an accountant by the Fairbanks Morse Co. Soon after his removal to Beloit, and only 6 months after the birth of his second daughter, his wife died. His wife's mother, who had come to live with them, took over the household duties and conducted the home until her death in 1903.
Not long after the death of her grandmother, the younger daughter went to live with her older married sister, and Charles Eugene soon went to Chicago, where he was employed as an accountant by various business firms until his own death.

m. Oct. 21, 1846, Town of Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., N.Y., Polly Low, daughter of TenEcyk and Louise (Horton) Low. (Her name is sometimes seen as "Eliza".) Polly Low was b. May 2, 1827, at Pleasant Brook, N.Y. and d. Aug. 28, 1909, at Rockton Ill., buried in Beloit, Wis.
Charles Eldred grew up on his father's farm near Pleasant Brook, to which his father had moved from the Town of Laurens, Otsego Co., N.Y., two years before (Ot Co Ld Rec). As he grew older he became employed in a local general store, which he purchased shortly after his marriage and which he continued to operate until 1867, when he sold his interests and re-established himself in the same line of activity in Oneida, N.Y., with his eldest son associated with him. He continued active in his Oneida business until his death, from erysipelas, at the age of 49 years. His obituary, as printed in the Oneida paper, follows.
"Charles Eldred of Oneida died at his residence on Main Street, Friday evening, the 20th inst, after one month's illness, in the 49th year of his age. Up to the time of his last illness he had been unusually blessed with good health, and it was believed by his attending physician that the disease from which he suffered would not prove fatal. Up to a few hours before he breathed his last, his friends cherished the hope of recovery.
"Mr. Eldred came to this village seven years agoand, with his eldest son, established himself in business, and gained through his gentlemanly deportment and fair dealings with his fellow man, a reputation more lasting than fame and more honorable to his memory than earthly possessions. Previous to his removal to this place he had spent the major portion of his life in Pleasant Brook, in Otsego County, where he had engaged in a general commercial business, and, at the time of his death, still held an interest in a general store in his town, Rosebloom, and had been the recipient of other marks of honorable distinction by his fellow townspeople, whe best knew him.
"Since his residence in Oneida his business relations with his public, though fraught with strong competition, had earned him deserved to friendship and public esteem, as was apparent on the day of his burial, when stores and other chief places of business were closed out of respect for the departed spirit. The funeral services, held at his late residence on Monday afternoon, were, in spite of the fierce and boisterous weather, attended by a large concourse of Oneida's most respected citizens, assembled to pay their last tribute and respects to one who, in private life, as well as public, was, in the truest sense, a good neighbor and loyal friend.
"His remains were entombed in the Oneida Castle Cemetery. His widow, and three remaining children, of whom Charles Eugene is the eldest surviving son, have the sympathy of our inhabitants in this their sad bereavement."
The family continued to live in the family residence at No. 10, Main St., until after 1885, when they moved to Muskegon, Mich., where the sons had secured employment. Eventually the entire family moved to Beloit, Wis., to take advantage of employment opportunities.

Robert Eldred came to New England about 1635. Entered into a contract of service with Nicholas Simpkins of Yarmouth for a period of three years from July 1639. On May 25, 1639, before the term began, Simpkins assigned this contract with the consent of Eldred, to Mr. Thomas Prince of Plymouth, the later to pay him four pounds per annum and a ewe goat at the end of his term, as agreed by Simpkins, and ten shillings more claimed by Eldred, provided his claim should be established. In August 1643, Eldred was in the list of inhabitants of Plymouth, able to bear arms. On Mar, 3, 1644/5 he was plaintiff and defendent in suits with persons residing at Plymouth. Not long after this he came to Yarmouth, where he married Oct 31, 1649, Elizabeth Nickerson, eldest daughter of William and Anne (Busby) Nickerson. He was Constable in 1657. He owned a farm given at Little Bass Pond near his father-in-laws which he sold Feb 25, 1666/7. About this time he removed to Monomoit and settled on a farm given to his wife by her father. His house was situated on the South side of the highway North of Oyster Pond in West Chatham. (Smith History of Chatham).
He died shortly before Jan 18,1682/3 when the inventory of his estate amounting to 316 pounds was taken. His widow, Elizabeth, and son Nicholas were appointed administrators Mar 9, 1682/3. This is the first inventroy record of any Monomoit settler.
The widow died just before May 3, 1706. Although no provision was made for the settlement of Robert's estate, and the names of her children would not so indicate. Mr. C. W. E. Smith, the Chatham Historian thinks Mary Eldredge who married John Smith of Eastham, may have been his eldest daughter.
The information on the first 4 generations was supplied by William Henry Eldredge of Twin Falls, Idaho (deceased) and Charles W. Eldredge of Rochester, NY. All other information compiled from City and Town Records of Harwich, Mass., Beverly and Winchester, Mass., Portland, Oregon, Bellingham, Washington, and records furnished by relatives and descendants of West Daggett Eldredge who came to Beverly, Mass from Harwich, Mass in 1804.

Has information on Robert's descendants
The first Eldridge to come to this shore was actually named Eldred. Robert Eldred is thought to have arrived in New England in 1635 as a servant of Capt. Nichalos (sic) Sympkins. He lived in Plymouth for about 10 years and then went to Yarmouth, MA. His descendents have used the name Eldredg, Eldredge, Eldridge, and Eldrge, sometimes with the same person being listed under several different last names.

Chris and all:
It is unusual in my experience for a young man of 14 to show such an interst in his family's geneology and to express himself in such cogent and intelligent detail. My compliments to you, Chris!
As to your query, I'm sorry I cannot provide you with any information about your immediate line. Allow me, however, to offer you a speculation along with an historical perspective concerning your distant ancestors.
While I doubt the castle legend, you may be interested to know that I think you probably descend from a long line of settlers and that your ancestors had been in America many generations before your great-great (?) grandfather, Charles Eldredge, was born. I suspect your family is connected--in some way, perhaps not directly-- with William Eldredge of Yarmouth, Massachusetts. William is thought to have come from England around 1635. He died approximately 1679. His wife was Anne Lumpkin (her father's name was William Lumpkin; we know her mother only as Tamesin). Anne died November 1, 1676. William and Anne had 10 children: Anne, Sarah, Bridget, Elisha, Betha, Jehosaphat, Joseph, Samuel,
John, William.
When he came to the New World, William Eldredge probably came for religious/political freedom and for the hope of a better life.
Best Wishes,
Richard Eldredge

Dear Carrie,
The most I find out about my ELDRED line, the more confused I'm getting about
the ancestry of my William ELDRED (who married Ann Lumpkin). You have him
listed as the son of Thomas ELDRED and Anna Watson, but some people list him
as the son of Robert ELDRED and Joan? (including Bob Duerigen). You
mentioned the the database you were given has William included as a son of
Thomas and Anna Watson. Do you happen to know where you got that database?
I'm just trying to sort through the evidence for the various theories so that
I can make some sense of this all.
Thanks again for your help!

(cont. from John Eldred c1419)
One of these Ipswich descendants was named Samuel Eldred. He was born Nov. 27, 1620. On Nov. 25, 1640 he was married to Elizabeth Miller, of Needham Market, Norfolk, in the church of St. Mary-at-Kay's, in Ipswich, England. The couple seems to have sailed to America very soon after the marriage, for Samuel is on record in Boston in 1641, when he joined the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Boston. He was actually living in Cambridge at the time, but he later lived at several other places near Boston, among them being Charlestown, Medford and Chelsea, where he plied his trade of shoemaker and farmed rented lands. In 1660 he moved to Wickford, on the western shore of Narrangansett Bay, in Rhode Island. He and his descendants lived in Rhode Island for the next 100 years, and more. (cont. under Thomas Eldred 1648)
Samuel (1) Eldred. (Thomas(7e) William(6e) Thomas(5e) Nicholas(4e) Thomas(3e) Reginald(2e) John Eldred of Corby.) These are the names of Samuel's ancestors back in England.
b. Nov. 27, 1620 at Ipswich, County Norfolk, England.
d Exact date of death not known because no record exists and his grave is unmarked at the present time. However, it was after April 13, 1697, for he deeded land to his son on that date. A plot of land was set aside from his farm where he was buried. This private cemetery is still in existence, though long unused.
m. Nov. 25, 1640 at St. Mary-at-Kay's, Ipswich, England, Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel Miller of Needham Market, County Norfolk, England.
Samuel Eldred was a shoemaker by trade and he probably engaged in that occupation for a time after settling in Cambridge, Mass., for the records do not indicate that he did any farming for some time after he came to New England. He probably farmed rented lands until his removal to Rhode Island. He appears a number of times on the court records of Plymouth Colony, usually as defendant with Edward Hutchinson as his attorney. In fact, Samuel Eldred seems to have been very friendly with the Hutchinson family, which may have been an influence in his decision to move to Rhode Island, which he did in 1668(date illegible). The Hutchinsons had already gone there after Ann Hutchinson's banishment.
He was one of the two signers to the deed by which the Sachems of the Narragansett Indians sold land rights to the new settlers. At first the region purchased was called The Narragansett. He was in the struggle between Connecticutt and Massachusetts for control of the Narragansett region. He represented Connecticut and suffered both persecution and imprisonment in defense of Connecticutt interests, which was appreciated and rewarded by the authorities at Hartford, as the records show. He last appears on public records in 1679.
Being now nearly 60 years old, he probably retired to his farm where he spent the rest of his life. In 1697 he deeded to his son, John, the house and 100 acres of f the homestead. His wife did not [appear] in the deed, so was probably dead. He was buried on the farm and 1/2 [acre] was set off as a private cemetery. HIs original house was still standing, though in ruinous condition, in 1721, and the remains of its foundations were visible as late as 1929.
Children of Samuel and Elizabeth (Miller) Eldred:
I. Elizabeth, b. Oct 26, 1642 in Cambridge, Mass.
II. Samuel, b. Oct. 2, 1644, at Cambridge. (*)
III. Mary, b. June 15, 1646, at Cambridge.
IV. Lt. Thomas, b. Sept. 8, 1648 at Cambridge. (**)
V. James, b. Exact date unknown but prior to 1657.
VI. John, b. Aug. 17, 1659, probably at Chelsea, Mass.
VII. Daniel, b. 1663 at Wickford, Rhode Island.

Robert, William and Samuel Eldredge came to this country, probably in the 1630's, as Samuel was living in Cambridge, Mass. in 1641.
We knew that the branch, (Samuel's) helped the settlement of Virginia. This means that the family has been in the US over 360 years.
The fact that the branch which we call our line, settled around Boston and Cape Cod has been established. We knew that they were Baptists, as they followed Roger Williams to what is now called Rhode Island, when he was driven from Massachusetts, because of his religious faith, as was Anne Hutchinson and her family.
That the Eldredges took an active part in the settlement of Rhode Island has been verified by existing records. For instance; Samuel Eldredge, one of three brothers who first came to America from England, was imprisoned in 1670 by R.I. authorities for assuming to call a jury. In 1674, this same Samuel Eldredge, was granted by the court, 20 rubles (6 shillings and a pence) for his good service in doing and suffering for the colony. Also, it is recorded that the Eldredges and some other brisk hands, went on a "night adventure" with Captain Benjamin Church, capturing 18 Indians. Also a son, Samuel was on a jury, summoned by his father in Kingston, R.I. in 1670.

Samuel ELDRED was born on 27 Nov 1620 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He was married to Elizabeth MILLER on 25 Nov 1640 in St.Mary At Kays, Ipswich, England.
Samuel, one of the nine early Eldred immigrants to the American Colonies, probably sailed soon after his marriage to Elizabeth inasmuch as he was one of the members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston in 1641. This organization made him a sergeant. He lived in Cambridge for several years and in the general Boston area earning his living as a shoemaker and farming rented lands until 1660. He then moved to Wickford, RI on the western shore of Narragansett Bay. He appears a number of times on the court records of Plymonth Colony, usually as defendent, with Edward Hutchinson as his attorney. In fact, Samuel Eldred seems to have been very friendly with the Hutchinson family, which may have been an influence in his decision to move to Rhode Island, which he did in 1660. The Hutchinsons had already gone there after Ann Hutchinson's banishment from Massachusetts.
Samuel was one of a committee of two who signed the deed by which the Narragansett Indians sold land to the white settlers. In doing so he "made his mark" to verify his signature, hence he could not write his name, a common thing in those days. In 1670 he was elected Constable at Wickford, RI, and at once became a prominent figure in the struggle for authority over the Narragansett Region, which was going on between Massachusetts and Connecticut officials. He represented Connecticut and suffered both persecution and imprisonment in defense of her interests. This was appreciated and rewarded by the officials of Connecticut. He is last mentioned as a public official in 1679.
Samuel Eldred is mentioned in a 1663 request that the area of Narragansett country in dispute between CT and RI be under the protection of CT.
Naraganset 3, July 1663.
We shoe names are under written being the Inhabitants & the proprietors of the lands lying in the Naraganset have & doe desire (according to his Majesties grante) to be under the Govern'tt of Conecticot Collony & Request there protection according to a letter sent in June last. mr. Bradstreet & others have desired the same in ye Letter formerly Mentioned.
(These names are listed): Joshua Hawes, Will Hudson, Waite Winthrop, Jno Crabtree, George Denison, James Browne, Alexand'r Al ffenick, Tho. Stanton Sen'r, Timo Mather, Jno. Cole, Rich Smith Jun., Richard Lord.
(These names are shown with their actual "marke"): Henry Tibit, Sam Eldred, Sam Waite, Tho. Sewell, Sam'l Eldred Junr, Ruben Willis & Armbras Leach.
In 1697 Samuel deeded to his son, John, 100 acres and a house, dying shortly thereafter. He is buried on his own farm, on a plot set aside by his son as "a burying place for our father's family forever." It is still in existence, though long unused an now grown up with weeds and brush. Samuel died between 4-13-1697 and 2-12-1699. His wife Elizabeth died about 1697. They are both thought to be buried in unmarked graves on their farm in the Eldred family burial grounds which is located at the exterme rear boundary of the Elm Grove cemetery in Allenton. It is about three miles south of Wickford and is only a few hundred yards east of the Post Road from Providence to New London. Samuel's son Capt. John Eldred is also buried there. The burial ground is on a half acre of land with several trees and surrounded by a chain fence. There is a marker there labeling it as the Eldred Family Cemetry. There is also an Eldred lot in the Elm Grove cemetery. A. H. Eldridge visited the site of the cemetery on 8 October 1956. It is located on the extreme rear boundry of the Allenton Cemetery. There is no marker for Samuel, nor for his wife Elizabeth. In 1721, his original house was still standing, though in ruinous condition, and the remains of its foundations were visible as late as 1929.

(cont from John Eldred c1674)
John (4) Eldred was also a farmer. He lived at various times in East Greenwich, Coventry and Exeter, R.I. He was twice married, butall his 10 children were by his first wife. This family is said to have been Royalist in sentiment at the time of the Revolution, which may account for the fact that all of them, by 1785, had moved to that area east of Albany, N.Y., around Stephentown, Petersburg and Pownal, where most of them lived the rest of their lives. In his old age, John, too, went to live with his children. He died at Pownal in 1784 and was buried in the Eldred Private Cemetery, 3 miles north west of Pownal, Vt.
His 10 children, in order of birth, were, Thomas, Nathan, James, Joband, Patience, his twin, Daniel, Amos, Gardner, Joseph, and John. Of these the families of Daniel and Nathan have been well traced. The families of Job and James have been less well traced, and but little is known about the families of Amos, Gardner, Joseph and Job. Patience married Stephen Harrington, and her descendants are well traced in the Harrington Genealogies. (continued later in this manuscript as follows:)

Until middle life John Eldred lived in Exeter, apparently on rented lands. He received 50 acres from his father. This he sold and moved to Scituate, R.I. where he remained until 1780. His sons moved away from Scituate, beginning that westward migration of the Eldreds that continues today. Three of his sons, Nathan, Job, Daniel, and a daughter, Patience, with her husband, Stephen Harrington, moved to Pownal, Vermont. Others moved to places in Massachusetts and N.Y.
