Kichline CrestJohann Peter Kichline, 1722-1789

Peter was born in the parish of Kirchleim-Bolanden, duchy of Nassau, Weilberg, Germany

"The Parish Register at Kirchheim (Kirchheimbolanden) gives the date of birth of Col. Kachlein, 8 Nov. 1722... The remains of Col. Kachlein and his two wives will shortly be removed to the Easton Cemetery." --Eyerman, p. 29. Buried German Reformed Churchyard, reinterred to Easton Cemetery, Plot 76, Sec. T. Res. Easton Area.

Peter attended the University of Heidelberg. Since he was over 16 he was listed on the ship's records of the Francis and Elizabeth in 1742 when he came to America with his family. He settled in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

Peter's Illustrious Service in the Revolutionary War

"Johann Peter, the oldest son, doubtless went off for himself soon after arrival in this country. He was in Easton, Pa, as early as 1749 and made an illustrious name for himself there." --Thomas Jefferson Kichline

"Peter Kichline (1722-89) was a member of the Committee of Safety, and of the first Constitutional Convention. He was Colonel in the Flying Camp at the battle of Long Island, where he was wounded. He was born in Heidelburg, Germany, and was chief burgess of Easton, Pa., where he died." -- DAR Lineage book, vol. 46, pp. 354-355.

"Peter Kichlein, 1774-75, was a member of the Provincial Convention. He commanded with distinction a rifle regiment in the Flying Camp at Long Island, where he was wounded and paroled, but not exchanged until 1778. He was born, 1772, in Germany and was chief burgess of Easton when he died, 1789." -- DAR Lineage Book, vol. 12, p. 136.

"A letter from the Hon'ble Jacob Arndt, Esquire, dated Forks township, April the 11th, and a letter from Peter Kachlein, Esq'r, dated Easton, April 10th, resigning his Office of Lieutenant of the County of Northampton, were read; And thereupon, Samuel Rea, Esquire, was appointed Lieutenant of the County of Northampton, and Philip Bahl, Esquire, Sub-lieutenant of the said County." -- "Minutes of the Supreme Executive Council", pp. 313, dated Philadelphia, Friday, April 14th, 1780.

"The Keichlines, of Bedminster, not so numerous as they were half a century ago, are descended from John Peter Keichline, who immigrated from Heidelburg, Germany, and settled in this township as early as about 1742. He had three sons, Peter, Andrew, and Charles, all of whom entered the Revolutionary army." --History of Bucks County, pp. 560-561.

"The hard life of the frontier not only made the Germans good soldiers but it made them still better fighters. It was a company of Germans who turned the tide at Saratoga - thus making the French Alliance a fact. The Germans from the hills were Morgan's resistance at Cowpens. One writer has said that 'Long Island was the Thermopylae of the American Revolution, and the Pennsylvania Germans were its Spartans.' He forgot to add that Colonel Kichlein was its Leonidas." --Stout, pp. 88-89

"It may also be worthy of note here that a very worthy elder of the congregation [The First Reformed Church of Easton, PA], Colonel Peter Kichline commanded a company of troops from Easton during the Revolution, and with his men as sharpshooters rendered most valiant service to Washington's forces at the disastrous battle of Long Island. They covered the retreat of the Continental forces, and saved the army from capture. "Colonel Kichline had taken much interest in the erection of the new church, but before it was completed he marched away with his men to Washington's camps, and saw it finished for the first time when, after the battle above named, he brought his sick and wounded men to Easton, and found a comfortable shelter for them in the new church building." --Some of the First Settlers of 'The Forks of the Delaware' and their Descendants, pp. 68-69
